# TechBlackboard — Technology should fit the problem

> TechBlackboard builds and applies practical technology, products and systems for sustainability, enterprise and real-world environments.

Technology should fit the problem.

## An applied technology company, organised around three activities.

TechBlackboard builds its own products, advises organisations on technology decisions, and runs real-world experiments. Each activity checks the other two: a recommendation we would not build on ourselves is not one we give.

## Three operating pillars

### BUILD — Products & Platforms

We build and operate our own software, because running a product teaches things that advising on one never will.

### ADVISE — Appropriate Technology Consulting

We help organisations choose, shape and integrate technology that fits their context — including the decision not to replace something that already works.

### EXPLORE — Labs & Field Experiments

We test ideas in real environments — farms, remote sites, constrained hardware — before they become recommendations.

## What we build

Software and hardware we operate ourselves — which means we carry the consequences of our own architecture decisions.

### AeternumAlly — Sustainability Technology

*Sustainability work, without the chaos.*

A platform for managing sustainability information, assessment, evidence, actions, workflows and reporting — built for organisations that have to produce defensible disclosures without a large sustainability department.

### FieldLab — Applied Field Technology

*Technology built for the field.*

Sensing, telemetry and edge systems for places where connectivity is unreliable, power is limited and equipment gets wet. FieldLab is where our environmental monitoring and offline-first field data work is developed and tested.

### SusChain — Supply Chain Traceability

*From fragmented records to a connected supply chain.*

A platform for traceability and operational visibility across agricultural supply chains. It connects organisations, suppliers, mills, lots, batches, storage, shipments and product records into one structured system.

## Appropriate Technology Consulting

Technology should fit the organisation — not force the organisation to fit the technology.

We advise on technology selection, architecture and delivery for organisations that need systems to work in the real world — under real budgets, real infrastructure and real operational constraints. Sometimes the right answer is a new platform. Sometimes it is improving the system already in place.

- Enterprise Applications & Automation — Making the systems an organisation already runs on work better — and connecting them to the ones it needs next.
- AI & Intelligent Automation — Applying AI where it measurably reduces effort or error — and saying so plainly when it does not.
- Technology & Solution Architecture — The structural decisions that are expensive to reverse later: boundaries, data, integration, security.
- Sustainability Technology — Sustainability reporting is a data and evidence problem before it is a disclosure problem.
- Field, IoT & Edge Systems — Systems that have to keep working when the network does not.
- Digital Product Advisory — From a problem worth solving to something real enough to test with users.

## Appropriate over excessive

The best technology is not necessarily the newest or most sophisticated. It is the technology that fits the context and creates meaningful outcomes.

Every recommendation we make passes through the same sequence. Skipping the first three steps is how organisations end up with impressive systems nobody uses.

1. Problem: What actually hurts, and for whom.
2. Context: The people, existing systems and way the organisation really works.
3. Constraints: Cost, infrastructure, capability, maintainability, security.
4. Technology: Only now: what to build, buy, integrate or leave alone.
5. Outcome: A measurable change in how the work gets done.

## Experience that spans platforms, not just trends.

Two decades of enterprise systems work, plus the hardware and AI work we run today.

- **Enterprise Applications** (Large systems of record and the processes around them.): Salesforce, [object Object], [object Object]

- **Workflow & Process** (Turning informal procedures into systems people actually follow.): K2, Power Platform, [object Object]

- **Collaboration & Knowledge** (Where documents, decisions and institutional memory live.): SharePoint, Microsoft 365, [object Object]

- **Operational Tools** (The unglamorous tools that most organisations genuinely run on.): Excel + VBA, [object Object], Google Sheets + Apps Script

- **Modern Platforms** (Cloud, interfaces and the plumbing between systems.): Cloud & APIs, [object Object], [object Object]

- **Emerging Technology** (Tested in Labs before it is recommended to a client.): Generative AI, AI agents, IoT & edge computing, [object Object]

These are technologies we have worked with directly. Experience with a technology does not imply an official partnership, certification or endorsement by its vendor.

## From spreadsheets to AI — without throwing away what already works.

Organisations do not start from zero. We modernise systems pragmatically — retaining what works, replacing what creates friction, and integrating new capabilities where they create measurable value.

1. Excel / Sheets — Where the process starts, in VBA or Apps Script
2. Workflow — When it needs approvals
3. Enterprise Platforms — When it becomes the system of record
4. Cloud / APIs — When it needs to connect
5. AI & Automation — When the volume outgrows the people

Every stage on this line is still running in production somewhere, in an organisation that depends on it. That is the point.

## Ideas we test in the real world.

A selection of what is currently running, prototyped, or still an open question.

- Farm weather station — A low-cost weather and soil monitoring station running on solar power at a working farm, reporting over intermittent mobile coverage.
- Offline-first edge gateway — A field gateway that buffers sensor data locally and reconciles it when a connection returns, rather than assuming one exists.
- AI assistant for geospatial work — A chat assistant embedded in GIS tooling that understands the layers actually loaded and can execute mapping actions on them.

## Working with the right ecosystem

TechBlackboard works with technology providers, specialists, consultants, research organisations and implementation partners to deliver solutions appropriate to each context.

## What we publish

- Agritech Life — Exploring agriculture through technology, science and hands-on field experience.
- Sustainability in THE Core — Notes on sustainability, systems design and technology in an imperfect world.
- Sustainability Reflection Context Builder — A prompt kit for writing sustainability reflections with AI — as a thinking partner, not a ghostwriter.

## Technology changes quickly. Real-world problems usually do not.

TechBlackboard exists to bridge the gap between new technology and the realities of organisations, people and physical environments.
